Multiple important 5G providers have recently started partnerships with the biggest cloud providers. The primary reasons are to develop new, cloud-based 5G radio solutions and deliver capabilities to the edge, unlocking new possibilities for enterprises and consumers. New customer-focused 5G use cases include automotive, transportation, robotics and other sectors.

Connecting vehicles to mobile networks is one of the areas of focus for AT&T and GM partnership. Verizon and IBM, on the other hand, are working together on a testbed environment for developing and testing 5G-enabled use cases for Industry 4.0 applications in Texas. Finally, Ericsson and Google are, among others, piloting 5G cloud solutions in Italy.

Nokia partnered with all three biggest cloud providers: Amazon, Google Cloud and Microsoft. They are assumed to focus on many areas, such as extending the reach of Cloud RAN and Open RAN technology with AWS, combining Nokia's RAN, Open RAN and Cloud RAN solutions with Google’s edge computing platform and developing cloud solutions for the enterprise with Microsoft.

Sharing technology and resources between the biggest 5G and cloud services providers brings many exciting opportunities, so advancements in cloud-based networking can be anticipated.
