Messaging applications account for a unique type of internet traffic, with a variety of content constantly being sent and received, including text messages, images, videos, voice messages, voice calls, video calls. They require constant connectivity and high upstream quality of experience. Congestion management is one of the critical issues for these types of sensitive applications. In application-aware networks, messaging can be recognized as a separate traffic class and treated by the operators with respect to its specific needs.
