Sandvine’s 2021 Mobile Internet Phenomena Report presents the most used network-based applications worldwide and reveals the constantly increasing popularity of videoconferencing. Despite introducing lockdowns in most countries over a year ago, the global ranking of the most popular virtual meeting applications Zoom and MS Teams went up in 2021, achieving 41st place (+10) and 49th place (+20), accordingly. Additionally, another virtual meeting platform Discord went up 42 positions to rank 19th.
Such applications require business-grade QoE with high bandwidth and low latency. Because of these specific requirements and a substantial share in overall downstream and upstream internet traffic, video conferencing should be treated as a separate traffic type in application-aware networks.
